Home to ancient sites, stunning coastline, local wineries and (supposedly) the birthplace of Marco Polo. \u00a0The jewel of the island is undoubtedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/southern_dalmatia\/korcula.htm\">Korcula town<\/a>. The ancient city is perched on a small peninsula and wrapped in defensive stone walls.. a cluster of remarkable Venetian-gothic architecture on a narrow peninsula. Lustrous Kor\u010dula stone formed the basis for a highly refined stone-carving tradition evident in the balustrades and reliefs of Kor\u010dula town. Often called a \u201clittle Dubrovnik\u201d, Kor\u010dula town is nowhere near as crowded as Dubrovnik and noticeably more peaceful than Hvar town on nearby <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/southern_dalmatia\/Hvar\/Hvar.htm\">Hvar island<\/a>.<\/p><p>Much of Kor\u010dula\u2019s economy is devoted to producing olive oil and wine. The grk grape, grown outside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.croatiatraveller.com\/southern_dalmatia\/korcula\/Lumbarda.html\">Lumbarda<\/a>\u00a0is used to make a popular dessert wine of the same name<\/p><p><strong>Old town.<\/strong>\u00a0The entire fortified Old Town is a sight!\u00a0 The narrow cobblestone lanes are lined with opulent architecture. We re wander through the historic center and take it all in. \u00a0Enjoy sea views and one of the many wonderful restaurants<\/p><p><strong>Land Gate.<\/strong>\u00a0(Kopnena Vrata): On the south side of the city, a wide stone staircase leads up to the grand Land Gate and 15th century Revelin Tower.<\/p><p><strong>St. Mark\u2019s Cathedral.<\/strong>\u00a0The Gothic and Renaissance church was built from the 14th to 16th centuries and is dedicated to the patron saint of Korcula.<\/p><p><strong>Marco Polo House.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Many believe that Marco Polo, the famous world traveler, writer, and explorer, was born on Korcula in the year 1254. Located on Ulica Depolo street, a visit to Marco Polo\u2019s\u00a0alleged\u00a0birthplace is something history and mystery lovers will enjoy.\u00a0 A portion of the house is available for guests to explore, and the view from inside over Korcula\u2019s Old Town is quite spectacular!<\/p><p><strong>St. Antun Church.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0About a half-hour hike from town, make the trek up St. Anthony\u2019s Hill to the St. Antun Church. The church is reached via a staircase of 102 steps through a Cypress forest. Hikers are rewarded with sweeping views from the hilltop.<\/p><p><strong>Wine Tasting.\u00a0<\/strong> Kor\u010dula island is home to some of the oldest vineyards in this part of the world and among the most exclusive and spectacular wine growing region in South Dalmatia. Be sure to experience Grk wine tasting in Lumbarda.\u00a0 Popular Korcula wineries in Lumbarda that offer tastings are Winery Grk, Popic Winery, Bire Winery and Lovric Winery. Most of the Island\u2019s wineries and vineyards have wine tasting facilities where you can meet the winemakers and learn the story of the wine you taste<\/p><p><strong>Vela Spila \u2013 or The Great Cave \u2013<\/strong> is one of the most interesting Kor\u010dula attractions. Artifacts found inside the prehistoric cave prove that it was used as a dwelling more than 20,000 years ago. The cave is just a 20-minute uphill walk from the port (make sure to pause and take in the gorgeous views of the bay along the
